Established in 1985, this area works to protect and enhance migratory seabirds and threatened species.
Thousands of resident and migratory seabirds call the refuge home, including red-tailed tropicbird (koa’e’ ula), Hawaiian goose (nēnē), and Hawaiian short-eared owl (pueo). The best spot within the refuge to go birding is the peninsula at Kīlauea Point.
