The North Shore of Kauai, home to Hanalei Bay and the Na Pali Coastline, has to be one of the most ideal places to vacation at in Hawaii. The North Shore offers secluded soft sand beaches, majestic mountains and valleys, waterfalls, family-friendly island activities, and the opportunity to experience a special place that many only dream of.
The North Shore of Kauai includes ranges approximately from Kilauea town to the end of the road at Ke’e Beach. Driving this 40 mile stretch includes many incredible vistas, beaches and quaint towns. Kilauea is most notable for the Kilauea Lighthouse. The lighthouse is situated on a finger of land jutting out into the sea making it not only an ideal place to build a lighthouse but also a safe area for Hawaii’s Shearwater birds to make their precarious homes on the edges of the sea. Shearwater birds are endemic to Hawaii and amazing to watch. The Kilauea Lighthouse was built in 1913 and is a fascinating Kauai landmark worth seeing.
Heading north of Kilauea are a number of popular beaches, most notable being Secrets Beach and Anini Beach. Secrets Beach often has treacherous surf and has a moderately difficult trail to the beach but if you are up for an adventure it is well worth checking out. The beach is naturally divided by cliffs and rock formations into three distinct beaches which you can pass at lower tides. Secrets Beach is a good place to get away from crowds and is quintessential Hawaii paradise.
Anini Beach is very different from Secrets Beach as it is protected by outer reefs making it very safe for swimming and
snorkeling. The meandering road to Anini is dotted with multi-million dollar homes, a small boat launch and campground. Towards the end of the Anini Road the ocean has a shallow protected area where one can walk out a great distance in the placid water.
The first real town you come to is Princeville. Princeville is a good location for travelers to find vacation rentals options. Princeville also has many resorts, most notable is the famous St. Regis Princeville Resort which is one of two top luxury resorts on the island. Princeville also has a shopping center, library, restaurants, shops and much more.
Just down the hill from Princeville
is a sight to take your breath away, Hanalei Valley and Hanalei Bay. Hanalei Valley still has
a producing taro industry. Taro has been the staple food source for Hawaii since earliest cultivation. Poi is made from Taro and for those adventurous eaters is a must. Hanalei Bay is world famous for its beauty. Many songs and artwork has been done of this area and is without a doubt one of the greatest beaches in the world. Hanalei town has a number of quaint restaurants and shops namely at Ching Young Village.
After Hanalei town the road narrows and is a drive you will never forget. Every turn seems to reveal one beautiful costal vista after the next. Most popular beaches in this incredible stretch are Lumahai Beach, Tunnels Beach and Ke’e beach. Ke’e Beach is at the end of the road as is the jumping off point for the famed Kalalau Hiking Trail. By many the north shore of Kauai is the most spectacular coastline in Hawaii if not the world.
The Kalalau Trail has a rich history and is only accessible by boat or hiking. Although the trail is maintained by the county, it is considered a rigorous hike and not for the faint of heart. Camping permits must be acquired prior to entering the park. For more information see this link: https://camping.ehawaii.gov/camping/all,details,1692.html.
