East Shore – Lihue, Kapa’a, Anahola
Kauai’s east shore stretches from the Lihue Airport to Anahola town. Nawiliwili is the main vacation area in Lihue with Kalapaki beach as the hub of fun. Locals refer to Kalapaki as Kauai’s mini Waikiki and although it is a far cry from the crowded streets of Waikiki it offers a lively beach scene complete with restaurants, surfboard rentals, shopping, and resorts. Situated on the harbor entrance and protected by an outer break wall Kalapaki Beach is a good place to learn to surf on the gentle rollers as you watch sailboats in the distance.
A short distance from Lihue is Kapa’a town, a charming and historic Hawaii throw back town that harkens to Plantation era Hawaii. The east shore of Kauai is the main residential area of Kauai with a population of 10,699. There are many shops, restaurants and markets usually in close walking distance to most vacation rental options. Because Kapa’a is centrally located between the North and South and has a range of affordable vacation rentals it is a popular location for many visitors. The most notable vacation rental in this area is the Waipouli Beach Resort.
In Kapa’a town the bike path has become a great outdoor adventure for the whole family. Over the years the County of Kauai has slowly expanded the bike path to stretch from Lydgate to Anahola. You can rent bikes at a number of different outlets right off the road. From there pack up a lunch or just plan on getting food along the way at the many food trucks that line the path.
Heading north from downtown Kapaa you first come to Kealia Beach which is a beautiful windswept eastside beach. If you want to take a dip in the ocean do so over on the far side of the beach called the landing side as Kealia can have strong surf. Kealia is a popular beach so if you want something more secluded continue on the bike path to head north still. You will pass many beautiful vistas and coves along the way and eventually come to Donkey’s Beach. Donkey’s Beach used to be a nude beach but with the advent of the bike path the character of the beach has changed and now nudity is somewhat frowned upon.
Donkey’s Beach is fairly secluded and offers many private areas to have your picnic. However if you want to find something still more isolated then keep heading north until you come up a small cove called The Crack. It is effectively the end of the line for the north side of the bide path and few make the full journey as well as hike down to beach. Chose your level of adventure and have fun!
Heading north from Kapaa the next town you will encounter is Anahola. Between Kapaa and Anahola are many great white sand beaches to explore, many of which require a short walk or hike and some right of the road. Please be aware that this strip of coastline does not have lifeguards and often can have strong surf. It is important to swim where there are manned lifeguard towers as the surf around Kauai is often very dangerous and rip tides can be deceiving. The safest beaches to swim at on the east shore are: Kalapaki Bay, Lydgate Beach, Fuji Beach, Waipouli Beach, the jetty side of Kealia Beach, and Anahola Beach Park, all of which also have manned lifeguard towers.
