If there’s one thing Kauai has in abundance, it’s natural beauty. This Hawaiian island is home to picturesque beaches, majestic waterfalls, and stunning botanical gardens. With so much beauty, it should come as no surprise that some of the best things to do during your Kauai vacation take place outdoors. For a fun adventure that has you exploring the East Coast, go for a ride along the Kapaa Bike Path. To help guests learn more about this path, the Kauai Exclusive Management team has put together this guide. Keep reading to learn more about what to do when you set off from your Kauai rental to peddle along this popular spot.
What to Know About Biking This Trail in Kauai
While sometimes referred to as the Kapaa Bike Path, the trail is officially known as the Ke Ala Hele Makalae. The multi-use path offers visitors and locals a leisurely way to explore and experience the beauty of the East Coast.
The trail, which primarily runs through Kapaa, is about eight miles long, from Lydgate Park in the south to Ahihi Point in the north. Some segments are still under development. Several interpretive signs along the trail highlight local archaeological, historical, and cultural sites. The hope is that the path will one day follow the eastern shoreline between Nawiliwili and Anahola.
During your ride, there are plenty of places to stop and explore. Pack your lunch and stop at one of the several picnic pavilions with bike racks found along the route. You can also check out some of the food trucks found right along the path, generally north of Holoholo Bike Rentals. In the winter, KaiaKea Point is a great spot to see if you can spot whales off in the distance. Other popular spots include Waipouli Beach, Fuji Beach, Kealia Beach, and Kealia Lookout.
